CHAPTER 16

Rowdy now knew what a death by a thousand cuts felt like. Every second that ticked by when he couldn’t see for himself that Justus was okay was a new cut to his soul.

He looked up to find Hugh riding on Cinco’s shoulders as they both ducked to make it through the emergency waiting room door.

Jealousy sneaked up on him and punched him in the gut. That was all wrong. Hugh should be riding on his shoulders. Hugh was his son. He could see his, Justus’s, and Hugh’s life so clearly. In the mornings, he would get up early and make breakfast for them as Hugh packed his backpack for school and Justus fussed over her landscape drawings. And later in the evening, they would talk about nothing and everything over dinner. Their lives together would be loud and happy and filled with love. His house would be messy with the things a family used every day—no, not messy—lived in. The thought should terrify him, but it felt comfortable . . . like that’s what had been missing all of these years.

Justus was right, his house was high maintenance. It needed a little boy to make it a home.

Elvis might like having a little boy around all of the time . . . maybe. Although with Justus and Hugh moving in, there would be two more people to wait on Elvis hand and paw. The dog certainly couldn’t argue with that.

“Is my mom going to be okay?” Hugh looked down at CanDee, who was standing on Cinco’s right.

“You bet, buddy.” Cinco’s eyeballs rolled up, trying to get a look at Hugh.

“She’s going to be fine. She’ll need a little time to heal, but she’ll be back to her old self in no time at all.” CanDee patted Hugh on the leg.

“Now, hit me with some facts, because I know you have some stored in the huge brain of yours.” Worth waggled his eyebrows at Hugh.

Rowdy was grateful that his little brother was going out of his way to take Hugh’s mind off of his mother.

“Did you know that reindeer eat bananas?” Hugh sounded so small and weak.

“Where do you suppose they get bananas at the North Pole?” Cinco laced his fingers behind Hugh’s back like a seat cushion.

“Don’t be silly. Everyone knows Santa Claus goes to Jamaica right after Christmas and stays for like six months. That’s when he fills the sleigh with bananas. Clearly these Rose men don’t take Santa Claus as seriously as we do. It’s very sad.” CanDee shook her head. “I think we’re talking a coal-in-the-stocking situation here.”

“Now wait a minute. Santa Claus loves me.” It was Dallas. “Last year he got me a pony.” He looked around. “I can’t speak for the rest of you.”

“I got a brand-new truck,” Worth chimed in. “I still haven’t worked out how he fit it in his sleigh, but I’m going with a teleporter like on Star Trek.”

“A new truck?” Hugh’s eyes turned half-dollar size behind his tortoiseshell glasses.
